Objective Summary: This was a 6-month long project where I developed a remote-controlled (RC) Jeep Wrangler Crawler. I was curious to create a scale model of a Jeep Wrangler because I own a 2020 Jeep Wrangler. I was exploring suspension systems for rough terrain. I decided to design the crawler with regular coil springs suspension and high pinion gears in the axles for better driveshaft angles. I wanted to choose the right scale for the RC car since I wanted to use off-the-shelf components for the mechanical and electrical components of the car. I decided to go with a 12-scale configuration since there is many products in the market in order to complete a 12-scale RC crawler car.
Design Process: I started designing the RC car with CAD and I was able to get the main components and electrical parts designed in the computer. I designed the suspension and the chassis in the computer and I researched for the electrical parts. I selected off-the-shelf electrical parts such as the Hobbywing QUICRUN WP 1080 Brushed ESC since it is programmable and it is a waterproof ESC. Since this was my first RC car project I decided to go with a Brushed DC motor set-up and I selected the INJORA RC Motor 550 (21T), which is specifically designed for RC Crawlers high torque applications. I used a Flysky GR3E Receiver 2.4G Waterproof the receiver for the car. I selected the 25 kg-cm full metal gear high torque ANNIMOS. The battery selected was a 7.4 V 5200 mAh 50 C Zeee. I decided to include in the car a Prefixal Shiftable Gearbox (INJORA), because it has two speeds and it included a micro servo as well to switch speeds. I also decided to use an off-the-shelf body of a Jeep Wrangler since it was very realistic.
Development Process: All of these components can be identified in the image of the chassis below. I 3D printed bracket mounts and other chassis components for the structure of the vehicle. I added LED lights as well. The Flysky receiver is compatible with their Flysky transmitter, and I programmed this controller with all the channels needed to control the car. The gearbox is controlled via the controller through channel 3. Channel 1 is steering, channel 2 is throttle.
